SUNFISH Project: SecUre iNFormatIon SHaring in federated heterogeneous private clouds

SUNFISH “SecUre iNFormatIon SHaring in federated heterogeneous private clouds“ is a Research and Innovation project funded through the first Horizon2020 call dedicated to ICT, specifically to Advanced Cloud Infrastructure and Services, which started last year and that will run until the end of 2017.

The SUNFISH project affects both Public Sector and Private Sector.

In fact, SUNFISH aims to provide a specific and new solution enabling the European Public Sector players to secure cloud federation based on the Public Sector needs, by ensuring interoperability and resource sharing among different private cloud infrastructures.

  • Federated private clouds belonging to different Public Sector entities will be able to share data and services transparently, while maintaining required security levels.
  • SUNFISH will improve security in federated “cross-border” clouds, boosting potentially the development of a cloud computing market in sectors where privacy and control of information propagation are essential (e.g., e-government, e-heath, etc.) while encouraging a better resource utilisation of Public Administration cloud infrastructure.
  • SUNFISH will better the existing techniques in terms of both the performance and utility (minimize information loss) for very large data sets, striving to overcome deficiencies in current mechanisms.
  • SUNFISH will provide a novel security framework that will allow organisations to deploy cloud-based services more quickly and cost-effectively, reducing the need for time-consuming secure audits of new applications.

On the one hand, the SUNFISH project will enable Public Administrations to innovate and add value to the services they actually provide to their citizens, reducing at the same time the management cost of their cloud infrastructures by bringing together services and infrastructures owned by other administrations – the project will achieve this by meeting the specific challenges faced by the Maltese and Italian Ministries of Finance, as well as by the UK Regional Cyber Crime Units. On the other hand, the SUNFISH framework will enable private companies, and particularly SMEs, to enter the cloud services market by offering specialised cloud solutions that satisfy the security requirements of the Public Administrations, either by using the SUNFISH technology as part of a cloud service, or by providing software and expertise to larger and established mainstream providers.
